Information:

I am currently looking for one/two PhD students in the broad areas of environmental/experimental fluid mechanics, renewable energies and wind energy. Research activities will be carried out at SAFL, the St. Anthony Falls Laboratories, within the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, MN, USA.
Different state of the art facilities are available: the Atmospheric Wind tunnel is able to reproduce typical atmospheric conditions, from thermal stratification to natural convection, allowing studies on turbulent boundary layers, near surface processes, and interaction with wind turbines. Measurement equipment include PIV and multi hotwire anemometry (cross and triple wire). Open channels and flumes of different sizes, with recirculation of water and sediments, equipped with ADVs and accurate laser scanning devices are available for studies of stream restoration and impact of Hydrokinetic energy devices.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor or a Master degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil Engineering or similar fields, including Physics and Atmospheric Sciences. The successful candidate is expected to show a good combination of knowledge and skills in some of the following areas: fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, statistics, meteorology,
geophysics.
Experience in laboratory measurements, Matlab and Labview programming are important assets, though not strictly necessary. Good knowledge of English language is required.
Applications should include a complete resume, possibly including grades transcript and the names and email addresses of at least two references, and must be submitted electronically to mguala@umn.edu.
Please contact me if you have questions on the specific projects.
